Tranquility in Suffering: The Peaceful Repose of Christ in Stamatis Skliris' Crucifixion

"Tranquility in Suffering: The Peaceful Repose of Christ in Stamatis Skliris' Crucifixion"

The painting captures a moment of profound solemnity: the Crucifixion of Christ. It starts with a close depiction of Christ's head, slightly leaning toward his right shoulder, with closed eyes, manifesting divine love and humility. This portrayal is notable for the serene calmness on Christ's face as he offers up his spirit to the Father, spread out on the cross. Remarkably, his expression lacks any trace of bitterness, regret, or desire for revenge, highlighting his infinite love. The artwork is executed in the traditional Byzantine iconography style, where light illuminates every detail, emphasizing even the tragic elements of existence. This lighting encourages viewers to reflect on how Christ could withstand such deep hostility and hatred with such peace and forgiveness. The artist, Stamatis Skliris, transcends the crucifixion's aspect of torture and instead communicates a sense of peaceful rest.

Interpretation: Why I called Christ "The Friend."
He looks at you with interest, detaches himself from the picture, and comes towards You, bends down, and leans to one side as if addressing you: "John, you?" "Yes, Lord, me. Since You know me as Your will and made me as Your will, what surprise could I offer You? After all, I did not obey Your will, and I am a great sinner." "No, John, I don't care about that; I'm proud of you; you're a surprise to me; I made you be a surprise; you're unplayable; that's why you surprise even me, your creator. Do you know what this surprise is? Freedom! Freedom evokes divine love in you and manic love from me to you. Well done, John, you kept the freedom of the Holy Trinity. You are my image, and I like you; I want you, and we match. I want to take you with me forever to be together in the ages of ages as if you were in the midst of the Holy Trinity!"

The painting is still in progress. Based on a Greek song "Μες στου Αιγαίου, Αιγαίου τα νερά... Άγγελοι φτερουγίζουν". Christ the Great Archpriest, acrylic icon on wooden board, 2016, by Stamatis Skliris

On Saturday April 16, 2016, I finished “Christ the Great Archpriest” for the Church of St Nektarios in Ano Voula (Greece). The heaven is His throne and the earth is a footstool for his feet. That is why I placed him as seated on the clouds.

The light creates a synthesis. It functions as a cinematographer who places everything in such a way that the vestments shine as if it is a supra-worldly sunshine, “luminaire” supernatural.
